Less is more або чи завжди менше, значить – краще

Abstract

Фраза «Less is more» (дослівний переклад ідіоми з англійської мови: «Менше є більше») є однією із найнезрозумілішо зрозумілою і найскладнішо простою. У ній закладена концепція мінімалізму, яка у різних формах знайшла своє застосування у філософії, а за нею – у принципах життя та поведінки (менше речей – більше простору; що менше чужих думок, то більше своїх), а також у професійних сферах: наприклад, у архітектурі та дизайні (чим простіший дизайн, тим він виразніший і функціональні ший: кожна деталь має нести сенс), моді, програмуванні (у вебдизайні для акцентування важливих елементів на веб­сторінці: що менше елементів, то більше уваги до кожного з них), у бізнесі ним можна замінити принцип «блакитного океану»: менше конкурентів – більший виграш. Як би дивно це не звучало, але цей принцип успішно застосовується і у методиці викладання іноземних мов. Оскільки в Програмах навчальної дисципліни «Іноземна мова за професійним спрямуванням» для здобувачів вищої освіти освітнього ступеня «бакалавр» немовних вузів заплановано одне заняття (2 години) на тиждень, то викладач вимушено постійно працює у пошуку максимального балансу між тим, що бажає зробити, і тим, що може, відсікаючи при цьому все зайве. Суть цього методу є в тому, що викладач заздалегідь готує і дає студентам на самостійне опрацювання певний матеріал, що стосується майбутньої теми й на занятті акцент робиться не лише на новому матеріалі, який повинен бути розглянутий (відповідно до Навчальних планів), але і на розгляді питань, які виникли у студентів при підготовці до заняття. Такий спосіб і називається «less is more», що як правило трактується як «менше означає більше». The phrase «Less is more» is one of the most obscure and incomprehensible simple English idioms. It contains the concept of minimalism, which in various forms has found its application in philosophy, and then develop gradually in the principles of life and behavior (less things – more space; the fewer other people’s thoughts, the more of our own), as well as in professional fields: for example, in architecture and design (the simpler the design, the more expressive and functional it is: every detail carries an important message), fashion, programming (in web design to emphasize important elements on a web page: the fewer elements, the more attention to each of them is paid), in business it can replace the principle of «blue ocean»; the less competitors – the more payoff. It may sound strange this principle is successfully applied in the methodology of teaching foreign languages. Since in the Programs of the discipline «Foreign language for professional purposes» for applicants for higher education degree «bachelor» of non­linguistic universities one lesson (2 hours) per week is scheduled, then a time­limited teacher, is forced to constantly work in search of the maximum balance between what he wants to do and what he can do in the classroom, cutting off all that is superfluous. The essence of this method is that the teacher prepares in advance and gives students a certain material related to the future topic for self­study and at the lesson the emphasis is placed not only on the new material to be considered (according to the curriculum), but also on the consideration of questions that arose in students while preparing for the lesson. Such method is called «less is more.
