Problematic Aspects of Diagnosing Mental Disorders Among Military Personnel of The Armed Forces of Ukraine (Web of Science)

Abstract

The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has resulted in the involvement of hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians. The combat zone is characterized by high levels of intensity, tension, and dynamism, placing military personnel under immense psychological stress. Such conditions can lead to exhaustion, which in turn can reduce the effectiveness of activities performed during armed conflict. Additionally, exposure to extreme conditions can result in short- and long-term psychological trauma and mental disorders. The response of military personnel to the stressors present in the combat environment is influenced by the unique circumstances experienced by each individual, as well as by their specific coping mechanisms. The impact of particular stressors on the mental health of servicemen, as well as the potential for the development of psychological trauma as a result of combat experiences, is influenced by a range of factors. These factors include individual psychological and personal characteristics, levels of psychological and professional training for combat missions, the nature and extent of combat motivation, and individual perceptions of the significance of combat within the broader context of their personal and historical experiences. Developing and implementing effective conceptual frameworks for understanding mental disorders and creating reliable diagnostic tools are crucial tasks in the current context. Such tools are necessary to facilitate accurate diagnosis and improve the quality of rehabilitation and socialization for soldiers returning from combat zones and their families. Moreover, effective diagnosis of mental disorders can aid friends and family members in understanding the nature of the problem, identifying the goals and motives behind specific behaviors associated with psychological trauma, and laying the foundation for improving the physical and emotional well-being of military personnel and fostering healthier interpersonal relationships. This article aims to investigate the specific challenges involved in diagnosing mental disorders among individuals serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Drawing on the findings of this study, the article seeks to identify the key problem areas in the diagnosis of mental disorders among military personnel and to propose potential solutions to these challenges. Methodology. During this study, some analytical and bibliographic methods were employed to analyze the existing literature on the diagnosis of mental disorders. Additionally, the study utilized systemic and structural, comparative, logical, and linguistic methods, as well as techniques such as induction, deduction, analysis, information synthesis, abstraction, and idealization to examine, correlate, and process the collected data. Furthermore, the authors of this study conducted an online questionnaire survey to identify key issues related to the challenges associated with diagnosing mental disorders among military personnel. Results. The findings of this study revealed key theoretical aspects related to the diagnosis of mental disorders among individuals serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Additionally, the study gathered input from psychologists, psychotherapists, and military personnel serving in the Armed Forces of Ukraine regarding critical issues associated with diagnosing mental disorders among military personnel. У конфлікті між росією та Україною задіяні сотні тисяч українців. Зона бойових дій характеризується високим рівнем інтенсивності, напруги та динамізму, що піддає військовослужбовцям величезне психологічне навантаження. Такі умови можуть призвести до виснаження, що, у свою чергу, може знизити ефективність діяльності, яка виконується під час збройного конфлікту. Крім того, перебування в екстремальних умовах може призвести до короткочасних і тривалих психологічних травм і психічних розладів. На реакцію військовослужбовців на стресори, присутні в бойовому середовищі, впливають унікальні обставини, які переживає кожна особа, а також її специфічні механізми подолання. На вплив окремих стресогенних факторів на психічне здоров’я військовослужбовців, а також на можливість розвитку психологічної травми внаслідок пережитих бойових дій впливає низка факторів. Ці фактори включають індивідуальні психологічні та особистісні характеристики, рівні психологічної та професійної підготовки до виконання бойових завдань, характер і ступінь бойової мотивації, а також індивідуальне сприйняття значення бою в ширшому контексті їх особистого та історичного досвіду. Розробка та впровадження ефективних концептуальних рамок для розуміння психічних розладів і створення надійних діагностичних засобів є ключовими завданнями в поточному контексті. Такі інструменти необхідні для точної діагностики та покращення якості реабілітації та соціалізації бійців, які повертаються із зон бойових дій, та їхніх сімей. Крім того, ефективна діагностика психічних розладів може допомогти друзям і членам сім’ї зрозуміти природу проблеми, визначити цілі та мотиви конкретної поведінки, пов’язаної з психологічною травмою, і закласти основу для покращення фізичного та емоційного благополуччя військовослужбовців. та сприяння більш здоровим міжособистісним стосункам. Метою даної статті є дослідження специфічних проблем, пов’язаних із діагностикою психічних розладів у військовослужбовців Збройних Сил України. Спираючись на результати цього дослідження, стаття намагається визначити ключові проблемні зони в діагностиці психічних розладів серед військовослужбовців і запропонувати потенційні шляхи вирішення цих проблем.
