Мовнозахисна діяльність українських правників Галичини у 20–30-х рр. ХХ ст.

Abstract

У статті проаналізовано діяльність українських правників в обороні прав української мови в Галичині у 20–30-х рр. ХХ ст. Висвітлюється роль українських адвокатів як захисників національних і громадянських прав українців. Українські правники провадили суспільно- політичну та культурно- освітню роботу, обстоюючи права української мови в жорстких умовах польської окупації. Задля реалізації цієї мети було засновано Союз Українських Адвокатів, також започатковано часопис «Життя і Право» (1928–1939 рр.), друковані матеріали якого засвідчили високу фаховість українських правників та їхню державницьку позицію. The paper highlights the social activities of Ukrainian lawyers to establish the Ukrainian language in Halychyna in the 20’s-30’s of the XX century. In the 20’s-30’s XX century Ukrainian lawyers were the leading self-organized force, legal representatives were implementing the task assigned to them to protect national interests in the context of the policy of pacification of the Polish government against Ukrainians, constant police terror against all manifestations of Ukrainian national life. The Union of Ukrainian Lawyers and the Society of Ukrainian Lawyers carried out active cultural and educational work, the activities of the Union and the Society were aimed at raising the legal culture of Ukrainians, creating a civil society, protecting the rights of the Ukrainian language. The body of the aforementioned organizations was the journal “Zhyttia i Pravo” (“Life and Law”) (1928–1939). The journal constantly advocated the rights of the Ukrainian language and the Ukrainian nation. The magazine testified to the high professional level of Ukrainian lawyers and their conscious civil stance. It is necessary to note the important role of K. Levytskyi, who directed the activities of the Union of Ukrainian Lawyers on the study and development of Ukrainian legal terminology. To this end, on May 8, 1936, the Union of Ukrainian Lawyers together with the Shevchenko Scientific Society in Lviv and the Society of Ukrainian Lawyers, established the “Terminology Commission for the Establishment of Ukrainian Terms in the Latest Polish Legislation”, which included A. Rak, L. Hankevych, Z. Lukavetskyi, also an authoritative linguist V. Simovych. The results of the work were published in the journal “Zhyttia i Pravo” under the heading “Outcomes of the Terminology Commission”. It is known that the Terminology Commission prepared for publication a Polish- Ukrainian dictionary of legal terms, but the work was not implemented due to political circumstances. Despite the oppression of the Polish authorities, the interwar period became an important milestone in the development of the Ukrainian language and legal terminology. A promising area of further research is the study of the contribution of the leaders of Halychyna in the 20’s-30’s of the twentieth century in expanding the functions of the Ukrainian language, in the development of a scientific and official- business style as necessary elements of the literary language.
